Lusaka, 3rd November, 2025

The Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) has welcomed the announcement by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) regarding a 46% reduction in the highest Emergency Tariff rate for residential customers from K6.39 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to K3.45 per kWh. This development comes as a significant relief for many households across the country, particularly at a time when the cost of living continues to rise despite appreciation of Kwacha Against US Dollar and others.  CUTS notes that this adjustment reflects the government’s and ERB’s commitment to ensuring that electricity remains affordable and accessible to ordinary citizens, even during periods of emergency or constrained power supply.

For residential consumers, this tariff reduction translates directly into lower electricity bills. Households will now spend less on power, freeing up income for other essential needs. The change is expected to bring notable financial relief to low- and middle-income families who often struggle to meet monthly energy costs, especially during times of economic challenges.

The reduction in the emergency tariff also supports greater energy security and inclusivity. By lowering the cost of electricity, more households are likely to maintain or reconnect their power supply, reducing dependence on unsafe or unsustainable energy sources like charcoal and firewood. This move could further contribute to environmental protection and improved quality of life for consumers.

Overall, the ERB’s decision represents a positive step toward promoting fairness and sustainability in the energy sector. It reflects a deliberate effort to cushion consumers from sudden price shocks while maintaining the financial stability of the electricity supply industry. CUTS encourages residential consumers to continue using electricity responsibly and to leverage the reduced tariffs to manage their consumption efficiently and sustainably.  CUTS is also hopeful that ZESCO and ERB will continue to promote  renewable energy transition and rural electrification  a reality for climate resilience and equity.
